Maker Club – Introduction to Raspberry Pi – Spring 2018

Get started with Raspberry Pi. In this workshop, we will help kids build their own computers, using Raspberry Pi 3 kits. Class will 10am-3pm, with a break for lunch at about noon.Kids can either bring a lunch, or you may add a pizza ticket, and we’ll provide pizza and drinks. We will cover the following topics:
- Putting the kit together
- Installing the operating system (Raspbian)
- Using the command line
- Installing software
- Updating and upgrading
- Using Scratch and Python
- Playing Minecraft Pi
Important: This class is designed for kids in Grades 3 through 8. Younger kids may attend with a parent, mostly to help with typing. Older kids may also attend, but might find the pace a bit slow.
The cost of this class does not include the required hardware. Each student must bring the following with them to each session of class. Suggestions are listed below each item:
- Raspberry Pi kit
- HDMI display, with power cable
- USB keyboard & mouse, unless it comes with your kit
- Small speaker or headphones (3.5mm) (optional)
We made an Idea List on Amazon, with most of the components listed above, to make it easier for you to purchase everything at once. Depending on the components, the hardware will end up costing $175-250.
For students will will take the Coder Girls Club – Level 2 class, this computer will have Python installed, so they can continue to work on projects at home.
