Hour of Code

Home / News / Hour of Code
October 5, 2015 by Chrissy Rey

The Hour of Code is coming soon! December 7-13, 2015, your school can participate in Computer Science Education week, by having every child do one hour of code. It’s fun, easy, and the it can help inspire kids to learn more about computer science and coding. Plus every public, US K-12 school that officially signs up to participate is eligible to win $10,000 of technology.

If you’d love to get your school involved, but just don’t know where to begin, we can help (for free!). The Coder Kids Club can provide assistance with any of the following to up to 5 local schools (within a 10 mile radius of Crofton, MD) that are, or plan to be, officially registered to participate in the Hour of Code:

  • Hour of Code sign-up and setup, including creating the required logistics plan
  • Professional development, to teach educators and volunteers some basic programming concepts, and guidance for teaching the provided tutorials
  • A fun assembly, to get the kids excited about coding

Interested? Use the form below to let us know how we can help.

  • Schools must be within 10 miles of Crofton, MD. While we'd love to help everyone, we are doing this on our own dime(s), and don't currently have the resources to extend beyond that for 2015.
  • Please note we have very limited availability for the assemblies! We suggest scheduling them the week of November 30.
  • While the ideal is to have every teacher do the hour of code with their classes, we realize that sometimes just isn't feasible. So we very highly recommend having 1-2 instructors (educators and/or volunteers) for every 4 groups (homerooms, computer classes, etc...) that will do the hour of code. That means if you have 20 groups, you'll need 5-10 instructors, each of whom will be teaching 2-4 hours of code.
  • The tutorials are very easy, and many are student-led, but we're happy to provide your team with some training if it's needed. We plan to offer free classes for this at our office in Crofton, on evenings and weekends, throughout November. We can also provide training at your location upon request.
  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
